President John Evans Atta Mills has expressed confidence in the ability of the Economic Community of West African State (ECOWAS) to build strong institutions and undertake its core duty of conflict resolution.
“I am of the strong hope that ECOWAS will get stronger, not only in resolving conflicts but also building strong institution”, he said.
While receiving a delegation from ECOWAS at the Castle, Osu, yesterday, the president briefed it on some of the efforts being made by the government inn the country.
He said the government was in the process of securing $3 billion from China to improve the country’s information base and other areas of the economy. Member of the ECOWAS delegation are in the country to attend the China ECOWAS trade forum in Accra. The forum is designed to provide the platform for private sector operators to develop partnership in six key areas – infrastructure development (especially roads, railways, housing, construction and transportation), energy generation, mining, agriculture, health care and pharmaceuticals and Information & Technology (ICT).
The president congratulated the new executive of ECOWAS on taking over the mantle of leadership of the sub-regional organization. Responding, the leader of the delegation, Mr. Kadre Desire Ouedraogo, thanked the President for accepting to host the forum. He commended President Mills for the significant role he played in the renewal efforts of ECOWAS, saying, “Thanks for accepting to host us”.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Mamuni, said the trade forum was aimed at forgoing partnership for the development of various areas, particularly infrastructure.
