In a country where reputable and honest politicians are in a short supply, and where life expectancy is abysmally low Ekwueme reaching the octogenarian status of 80 is worthy of fabulous celebration. No wonder former military ruler and Elder statesman Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd) eulogized the Birthday Boy profusely for his landmark achievement in business and his chosen career.
Ekwueme has seen the good and bad sides of Nigerian political life while he was in his second term as the Nation’s Number two man; the military struck and detained him from 1984 to 1986, and restricted movement from July 1987 to January 1988.
He authored and proposed the six geo-political zones arrangement for the country to replace the former four regions that existed before the military struck on January 15, 1966, during the 1994/1995 constitutional conference. He also led other well-meaning Nigerians, under the auspices of G18, or group of 18 wise men. That championed the campaign for the release of the Chief MKO Abiola, winner of the 1993 presidential election, from detention and for him to be sworn in as president Ekwuene preaches Peace, Equity and Justice for all Nigerians, irrespective of tribe or creed. Till date, he remains one of the quintessential politicians and committed patriots the Nigerian Nation has produced in contemporary times which perhaps, is why highly placed Nigerians have been celebrating and eulogizing him at his attainment of the landmark age 80.
Personalities across the world recently saluted the re-elected president of the United States of America, Barrack Obama the world leaders also pledge their readiness to work with the 51 year old first Black American President endorsed for another four year in the 2012 US poll.
