The confederation of African Football has announced that the 2013 edition of the GLO-CAF Awards will take place in Lagos on January 9, 2014.
Lagos hosted the event for the first time in 2009 when the 2008 edition was successfully staged in the city.
The GLO-CAF Awards has been held in five cities across Africa since Globacom became the title sponsors. It started in Abuja in 2005, while Ghana hosted the Awards four times (2006, 2009, 2011 and 2012). Lagos (Nigeria), Lome (Togo) and Cairo (Egypt) hosted the event once each.
Kano Nwakwo, who won the award in 1999 during his days in Arsenal, is the last Nigerian player to win the prestigious award.
Yaya Toure of Manchester City and Cote d’Ivoire is the reigning African Footballer of the Year. He also won the 2011 edition.
Globacom said that the 2013 edition will provide a good platform for Nigeria’s leading players to contest for the award again, especially after the victory of the Super Eagles at the 2013 edition of African Cup of Nations in South Africa. The fortune of Nigerian players across Europe has also been on the ascendency.
A total of 13 award winner including the African Footballer of the Year, National Team of the Year and Coach of the Year will be announced at the event.
